What is the Best Time of Year to Kill Moss on Driveway? And Is It Necessary?
Are you wondering when the best time of year to kill moss on your driveway is? Summer is the easiest time to clean a driveway from our perspective, but all year round is okay. At British Roof Cleaning we have been revitalising tired roofs for nearly a decade through soft wash roof cleaning . As part of our exterior cleaning service we also clean patios and driveways – either as an additional or standalone service.
March Update: As we enter March 2024 and move towards Spring and Summer, now is the optimum time to get your driveway cleaned. We are entering prime moss removal calendar territory. We cover most of England and Wales, with some Scottish areas also within our remit.
We utilise two main driveway cleaning methods. We can pressure wash tarmac or soft wash surfaces like Indian sandstone. We have all the tools, experience and solutions to make any surface look brand new again. A jet wash clean instantly removes all grime, moss and stains, and a soft wash is very fast to work (hours/days).

We always value simplicity in our work, which is why our daily approach is straightforward, tried and tested. Efficient and effective roof moss removal requires a thorough understanding of roofs, as well as general building construction knowledge. Therefore, we have a varied background of trades expertise within our team. As well as specialising in roof cleaning we have also cleaned hundreds of driveways, patios and all exterior services such as rendering, brick and stone work. We also have a top of the range airless sprayer to paint/coat all exterior surfaces.

If you’re unsure whether you need your driveway cleaned, there are a few things you can look for to be sure. First, take a look at the colour. If it is starting to turn green or has dark spots, it is likely to be moss. Another sign of moss is if your driveway is becoming slippery or difficult to clean. If you see any of these signs, it’s time to take action to remove this nuisance from your property.
‘what is the best time of year to kill moss on my driveway?’
Almost always, now. Once you have seen discoloration, it’s prudent to act.
Autumn/Winter
Unlike most other UK plants, moss does NOT die in the winter. It survives, and not only does it survive – it thrives. Mosses don’t need roots into fertile soil and they’re fine in the shade and even a hard surface, which is why it normally accumulates the most in shaded areas. It’s also the reason that a hard surface like your driveway can still host significant moss growth.
Due to their unwanted resilient nature they’re also known as the ‘cockroaches’ of the property plant world, which we think is unfair.
Unfortunately, despite not needing real roots, moss can easily make use of gaps and diminished surfaces. It is their ability to produce spores which is why they spread so easily. This is especially true in winter when they are encouraged by our frequent British rainwater. And the more wet moss accumulates, the more it weaves together and creates a self-feeding unit – only serving to perpetuate the problem.
Winter also brings rain (and lots of it)
If you have a bad back, it will get worse as you begin to need to constantly pick up clumps of green on your patio/.driveway.
Things For You To Consider: Can you afford to ‘wing it’. You might get away with 1 or 2 winters with lightly dusted moss but this is a progressive problem you can’t ignore.
Things For Us To Consider: We check the weather forecast the night before. Light drizzle is not a problem for us as we are used to working in all weather. However it’s more effective to clean an exterior surface on a clear day, when temperatures have stayed above zero the night before.
Spring/Summer
Spring is our busiest time when we receive the most inquiries. It is obvious to us by now that most people believe this to be the best time of the year to have their driveway cleaned. Perhaps this is correct and it just so happens that we enjoy Spring too as we wear lighter clothes and more light means we can finish those roof cleans which sometimes run over in the Winter because we’ve ran out of light.
Things For You To Consider: Be sure to get a quote early and book a date in our calendar if you don’t want to wait too long.
Things For Us To Consider: Not much, life is straightforward.
The truth is that the best time of year to kill moss on your driveway is now or very soon. Once you’ve noticed it, it’s already progressing to an unhelpful level.
